After the huge success of the Mk1 Golf, Volkswagen introduced the Mk2 Golf at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September '83 with UK production commencing in March 1984. During it's production Volkswagen continued to developed the Mk2 with mechanical upgrades including the change from the early K-Jetronic injection system to the more advanced Bosch L-Jetronic / Digifant system and minor interior and exterior changes culminating the 'Big Bumper' models being introduced in late 1989 models, with production finally ceasing in 1991.
This immaculately present late production, Aug '91, Volkswagen Golf GTI was originally sold through the Volkswagen St Georges Garage Ltd dealership and was clearly well specified when new, with the car having the following specification:
- 1.8 Litre Digifant Engine (PB engine code) with 5 Speed Manual
- Finished in Alpine White (code: L90E)
- Ultraviolet Interior (code: XT)
- 15" BBS RA Alloys (fully refurbished and fitted with a matched set of Goodyear Eagle tyres)
- Central Locking
- Power Steering
- Sliding sunroof
- VAG approved Scorpion Alarm
- Door pocket speakers.
In addtion to these options the history file also shows that the previous keeper also puchased the following Volkswagen approved options:
- Italvolanti / Votex 3 spoke leather steering wheel
- Rear window blinds
- C-Box (Fisher casette box)
Having owned a number of Mk2 Golfs the opportunity to find original, unmolested, low mileage examples rarely occurs these days, however having only had 3 keepers, the last for 22years this example is as close to 'factory fresh' as we've seen in many years. Originally registered to Woods Rental in Aug '91, the GTI was owned by them for 6months before being sold back to Volkswagen St Georges and then on to Dr H Weston, whom in turn owned the Golf until selling her to the current registered keeper in Feb '94.
For the next 22years the Golf GTI has truly been cosseted and it appears that every invoice is present through the years of ownership with the owner even saving copies of correspondance between himself and Volkswagen, the history folder is a great read in its own right.
In her stunning Alpine White this 'Big Bumper' Mk2 Golf GTI is in excellent condition. The panels are free from any dents, with panel gaps consistent with Volkswagens high build quality. All the rubbers, side trims, wheel arch plastics and the bumpers have resisted any bleaching, suggesting she has been garaged through her life and excluding the odd minor mark, none of which detract from her condition it is remarkable to consider this car is now 25yrs old and she happily still wears her GTI badge with great pride.
Consumate with the exterior condition the interior is just as it left the factory. The seats, in the rarer Ultraviolet fabric are free from any marks, the drivers seat bolster is perfect, the fabric throughout is free from any creasing and the inner foam remains completely firm. Often a weak point on Mk2 Golfs the roof lining and rear parcel shelf (with rear window blind fitted) are in first class order and the car comes fitted with original front mats (rubber) and a full set of Votex (Volkswagen option) over-mats. The dash area remains free from any damage and the MFA (trip computer) remains fully functional and on inspecting the boot, the car has benifited from an Acoustickit for additional sound reduction, its great to note that not only is the tool kit present, along with additional fire extinguisher and warning triangle but that the all important Volkswagen 'build' sticker is present on the rear panel.
Mechanically this Golf GTI has obviously been cherished. The 1.8litre, 8valve engine fires without hesitation and settles into a smooth idle with exhausts gases leaving the engine via a genuine VAG exhaust system! Out on the open road the GTI performs exactly as expected with the 8valve providing smooth power delivery through the crisp 5speed gearbox. As the advertising campaigns suggested, 'if only everything in life was as reliable as a Golf', I would have no hesistation in jumping into the GTI and driving anywhere, she's a real pleasure to drive.
A truly cherished example this Volkswagen Golf GTI comes with one of the best history files we've seen. The lever arch folder contains invoices in excess of £6500, nearly every invoice is VAG and shows services at 16351, 22697, 26103, 307679, 35141, 38759, 43758, 45170, 49986, 53427, 53456, 54070 and 56143 miles ALL carried out by Volkswagen! She still wears her supplying dealer number plates, has her original Tax disc holder and dealer key ring. More recently, Aug '16, she has had her Cambelt / Aux belt / tensionser replaced along with other service items providing further confirmation that this GTI has been fastidiously maintained. In addition to her comprehensive history file, which in addtion includes MOT certificates, VW accessory leaflets, 18 previous tax discs, she comes with 2 sets of keys and a valid MOT to August 2017.
Without exception one of the finest Volkswagen Mk2 Golf GTI's we've come across, with a remarkable history file and an example that will provide many years more enjoyment for her next owner.
