Designed by Giovanni Michelloti, famed for the creation of many Italian exotics such as Ferrari and Maserati, Michelloti first penned the GT4 prototype, a Spitfire 4 / Mk1 Spitfire based GT car in 1963 utilising the Spitfires 1147cc engine. The styling of the car was meet with great reviews, however the additional weight associated with the coupe shell meant that plans to put the car into production where shelved. In '64 Standard Triumph utilised the styling to create glass-fibre molds which when grafted onto the race developed Spitfire 4 / Mk1 shell led to great success, finishing 13th overall and 1st in Class at the 1965 24hr Le Mans. Triumph decided to revisit the GT4 idea and in replacing the under-powered Spitfire 4 / Mk1 engine with the more powerful Triumph Vitesse 2 litre 6 cylinder engine, the GT6 was born and production of the Mk1 GT6 commenced in July 1966.

During the course of the next 4 years the GT6 received a number of styling changes and mechanical developments, dramatically improving 'on-limit' handling and in Oct 1970 the GT6 Mk3 was introduced with a total of 13,042 units being built before the end of production in December 1973.

Originally sold in August 1972 this sensational matching numbers Triumph GT6 looks utterly resplendent finished in her original Saffron Yellow (code 54) with contrasting black interior (code 11) and features the glorious 2 litre straight six engine sending power to the rear wheels via the factory optioned 4 speed 'Overdrive' gearbox, this being engaged on both 3rd and 4th gear.

Purchased by a previous owner in circa 2012 he set about transforming the GT6 into the show-stopping example we're proudly offering, with works being carried out over 4 year period, with this including:

  • Body work restoration entrusted to DMS, Northampton who carried out a a complete body-off chassis strip down and body rebuild, followed by a full respray in factory correct Saffron Yellow. The paint finish is mirror glass smooth, with a reflection to match and is extended to the underside too which received the additional benefit of correct underbody anti-corrosion protection! In carrying the works DMS finished the chassis in Saffron yellow too, giving a 'cleaner' underbody appearance.
  • All mechanical / electrical components stripped, checked for wear and either restored or replaced. The engine has been updated to run on unleaded fuel and also benefits from an electronic ignition conversion.
  • Rocker Cover repainted in correct factory silver.
  • Radiator re-core and fan shroud stripped and powder-coated, plus new engine bay shrouds.
  • Suspension fully stripped. All new shock absorbers, all bushes front / rear replaced and upgrade to Polyurethane, all new joints / bearings etc. All larger components painted / powder-coated, chassis upgraded with the adapted rear shock absorber mount kit.
  • Rebuilt braking system including new disc / pads, calipers, brake master cylinder and the addition of a brake servo kit.
  • New OEM clutch and clutch master cylinder.
  • Fuel tank stripped / cleaned.
  • New Stainless Steel exhaust system.
  • All fuel lines, brake lines, hoses replaced, many upgraded to silicone.
  • All new nuts, bolts, fittings throughout.
  • All new rubbers, window chrome inserts and exterior chromework replaced and a Webasto Hollandia tilt / lift-out tinted sunroof fitted.
  • 13" wheels stripped and refurbished and fitted with new 155/80/13 Continental tyres.
  • Interior completely stripped, new carpets, seat covers, roof lining, dash all specialist sourced and correct to factory spec.
  • New wiring looms throughout.
  • All lens housings / lights checked for wear and replaced as necessary.

Since completion of her show quality restoration the Triumph GT6 has completed minimal mileage (approx 2k miles and shows 44k miles on the oddometer) and looks spectacular, her chromework is completely free from any pitting and the bodywork, running gear and under-carriage are all finished to a much higher standard than was ever achieved at the factory. Stepping inside the cockpit, doors shutting with a reassuring weight the quality of the rebuild continues, everything finished to factory spec, with just the addition of red inertia seat-belts, red piping to the seats and this is extended to new front mats also finished to match. The interior looks like new, both seats remain fully adjustable and still have functioning tilt mechanisms to allow access the rear or should larger items need to be carried....remember this is a mini-GT car, then there's great access via the tailgate too.

Mechanically, as to be expected after such a comprehensive rebuild, the GT6 is in fine fettle. The original 2 litre straight six, with her eletronic ignition and upgrade for modern fuel, starts easily with a menacing growl, gases leaving the engine via the twin tail-pipe stainless system, there's no wonder that many people referred to the Triumph GT6 as the mini E-type, the sounds is completely intoxicating and out on the open road is where the GT6 comes into her own. With her improved suspension, the way the GT6 corners inspires confidence. Unlike many a classic car I'm pleased to say the brakes have a wonderful weight to them aided further by the benefit of the brake servo upgrade and with an almost seamless operation on her overdrive, the engine has plenty of torque and refinement to allow for a comfortable cruise....or should the drive wish, a slightly more spirited drive on the quieter A-class roads.

With so many GT6's falling into a mid-ground of medocre rebuilds it's not often that we find one, that not only has had much love lavished upon it, with the considerable expenditure too (invocing well in excess of £20k!), but that the quality of the works matches the expectation! An exceptional example she comes with two sets of keys, a huge file of invoicing, owners handbook, workshop / parts manuals and she'll come freshly serviced and with a new valid MOT offering peace-of-mind motoring. This 1972 Triumph GT6 manual overdrive is without doubt one of the finest examples available, perfect for any collection and will look sensational gracing any classic motoring event.
