Volkswagen Scirocco GTS - SOLD

Penned originally by Giugaro the Volkswagen Scirocco was designed to be a replacement for the successful 1960's Karmann Ghia. Its sleek and sporty styling was designed to set it apart from the 'new' Golf, for which it shared many of its underpinnings and mechanicals. Production for the Scirocco lasted some 18 years with the car being reworked, in-house, in 1981. The heavily redesigned the Type 2 (Typ 53B internally) now had more front / rear headroom, a larger luggage area, benefited from a reduced coefficient of drag and like Type 1 continued to built for Volkswagen by Karmann of Osnabrück.

With a number of models, trim levels available throughout production; L, CL, GL, LS, GLS, GLI, GT, GTI, GTL, GTS, GTX, GT II, Scala, GT 16V and GTX 16V the Scirocco remained in production until 1992, the name then laying dormant for 16 years until VW resurrected the name for the all-new Scirocco now based on the mk5 Golf platform and such was its success than the car won "Car of the Year 2008" from Top Gear magazine.

Having owned a number of classics over the years its not often we're left in 'awe', but this Scirocco GTS is one such car, no surprise as she has just 35k miles from new! Owned by Mrs Waby for a staggering 28 years and only 2 keepers since all have maintained the quality and integrity of the car and we can say without doubt that this example is as close to 'factory fresh' as we've ever seen! From a review of the history file, invoices going back to the original purchase invoice we've noted that the GTS drove the majority of its mileage in the first 10 years and she has driven less than 1000 miles in the last 25 years!

Finished in her stunning Flash Silver Metallic, the paintwork remains in exceptional condition, confirmed in the fact that we've been around the car with a digital depth gauge to confirm her originality, 99% remains within factory tolerances. The panels are free from any dents, with gaps consistent with high Volkswagen build quality standards and the paint work has the most sensational shine, free from any fade, with just the odd stone chip (correctly touched in with the correct LP7Y paint code). All the rubbers, trims, plastics and the bumpers have resisted any bleaching too, a remarkable example in every way and with her fully refurbished 14" 'P-Slots" Scirocco GTS could easily be mistaken for a car a 10th of its age or an example fit for the Volkswagen museum

Opening the door and the quality continues, with the first impression smell (new Volkswagen!), suggesting you're about to sit in a brand new car. The seats, with their two-tone material are in perfect condition. The seat bolsters remain firm and supportive with no nasty marks, tears or creases! The rest of the interior also remains in excellent condition; everything in factory fresh condition and detailed correctly, the steering wheel / gear knob / pedal rubbers / mats having close to zero wear. The headlining is perfect as is the rear parcel shelf, she comes with a full set of genuine over-mats, her original Blaupunkt Oxford stereo and on inspecting the boot area, its great to note that not only is the tool kit present, the spare wheel still wears her original Michelin tyre and for all the VW aficionados the all important build sticker remains in place on the rear panel.

Mechanically this Scirocco is a delight. The 1.8 litre, 4 cylinder fires without hesitation and settles into a smooth idle. Since her arrival we've fully inspected the car and noted that a major service with items such as cambelt, water-pump, plugs, filters etc have been changed in the last few years... note, we'll still carry out our own 'in-house' service, OE parts only, prior to delivery. On stepping and closing the door, you're immediately feeling is one of quality, the door shuts with zero effort, but has a reassuring 'thunk', the seats are wonderfully supportive and all the switch gear is positioned with the drivers focus in mind. Out on the open road, the feel of quality, safety and knowing you're driving something special continues, the engine pulls cleanly through the rev range, the brakes are perfect, steering nicely balanced....basically, she's just one of the cars you could drive endlessly and get out feeling fresh and unflustered, you have to drive her to know how good she is!

Whilst its cousin, the mk2 Golf may steal the limelight, we just can't fault the originality, quality, history and condition of this car. A truly cherished and exceptional example this 35k mile Volkswagen Scirocco GTS is the best we've seen and with just 61 examples (only 18 on the road!) the GTS is rarer than any mk2 Golf; simply put she ticks all the right boxes, a true classic in every sense and is ready to 'Wow' her new owner with decades of enjoyment ahead too.
