Originally introduced in 1950 the Volkswagen Type 2, known officially as the Transport, Kombi, Microbus or informally as the Camper in the UK, the original Split Screen served many purposes, including being used as a Fire Tender, Ambulance and even as single vehicle transporter for Volkswagen dealerships. However in its guise as a Microbus and Camper and the freedom offered by weekend escapes, California dreaming / surfing and the growth of the VW scene has progressively moved the Type 2, be it Split Screen (T1) , Early Bay (T2a) or Late Bay (T2b) to almost legenedary status and as such the Type 2, through continued developement, changes to production location, eventually seeing vehicles being built in Brazil enabled the Type 2 to remain in production until 2013.
Having only had 2 previous keepers our immaculately presented Type 2 Low Light Early Bay Westfalia was originally sold through the Autorigoldi Volkswagen, Milano dealership, Italy and remained in Italy until 2007 before being imported privately by a fastidious Type 2 enthusiast, who set out to find the most original low mileage Camper he could. With a fully stamped service book the Camper had only 10,900 miles at time of import and although completetly rust free the Camper was stripped back to bare metal and professional repainted at the cost of £4500 in Pastell White over her original L60D, Elm Green. The recommision also included replacement of the canvas in the Pop-top, an alternator upgrade replacing the original dynamo, the fitment of a night heater and upgrades to both the braking and suspension with adjustable coil-overs on the front and lowered spring plates for the rear, this giving the Camper a lower stance, but easily adjustable should the new owner wish to return the Camper to the original ride height.
Mechanically the Camper is in great condition with the original 1600cc engine that pulls well throughout all gears. The Camper is most happy on A-class roads and its a real delight to be able to take a journey at a slightly slower pace and enjoy the scenary, the previous owner advises us that they even used the Camper for a tour of Europe, where she performed faultlessly travelling approximately 1800miles.
Now with just 22,000 miles the interior looks virtually unused and she retains all her original features; 3/4 width Rock n Roll bed, storage units, cool-box / sink unit with working fresh water flipper pump, main dining table, original buddy seat, fold away table (for when the sliding door is open), single camp bed in the pop-top, rarely seen front compartment hammock and she even has her original mosquitto net.....great for star-gazing at night. In addtion to the original features the Camper will also come equipped with her front screen black-out blind, additional heat reflective night blinds, wind-breaks for when you want to enjoy out-door dining and a set of wheel chocks should 'park-up' over night on a slight gradient.
With her original dealership book back, stamped service history, receipts showing recent expenditure and valid MOT this 22,000 mile Early Bay must be one of the most highly desirable Westfalia Campers available and is ready to be enjoyed (we have to admit to having enjoyed weekends away in her already) and if properly cared for will only continue to appreciate in value as such low mileage, highly original examples are few and far between.
